New world, new trends, new lifestyles and new allergies came together with that. Later on I will discuss this, but for now I would like to focus on a ”classic” body dysfunction: diabetes.
There are some lucky ones between us who do not need to worry about what they are eating, but some people do. In this article I’m going to present a list of food which diabetics can eat.
Myself do not have any kind of body disorder. However, working in the food industry it I often have to deal with people’s lives. So I try my best to offer them a good experience based on knowledge, trust and fun at the same time.
Deal with some allergies is pretty simple.
Sometimes it’s enough to remove one or more elements/ingredients from a dish. For example: nut allergy. This allergy is one of the most risky ones, but I also believe it’s one of the most easiest to deal with.
Before presenting the list of food which diabetics can eat, let’s dive a bit more further into the subject. This article is for people with diabetes as well as for people who are interested.
What it is ?
Diabetes or DM (Diabetes Mellitus) is a disorder of metabolism and the main characteristic is a high level of blood glucose which is our main source of energy.
Most of the nutrients our body need comes from the food.
The main organ responsible for the good function of the blood sugar (glucose) is the Pancreas which generates a hormone called insulin. The main role of the insulin it´s to convert the sugar into energy.
How many types?
There are different types of diabetes which are determined by either the pancreas ( type 1) or the cells (type 2).
This type can start at a very young age and it´s due to our body attacking the pancreas. As a result the pancreas is producing a low level of insulin or nothing. It can have different denominations such as Juvenile Diabetes or Insulin-Dependent Diabetes MellitusI (IDDM).
It´s more common that this type of diabetes develops at an adult age. In this case the pancreas still generates a quantity of insulin, but either it´s not enough for our body or there is a insulin resistance from the cells ( usually the ones in the fat organs like the liver).
The opposite of type 1 and type 2 diabetes is called: Non Insuline-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (NIDDM).
The last type of diabetes is more rare and happens only to women during pregnancy so they develop a high level of blood sugar.
- Healthy Diet(Good Quality Right Quantiy)
- Stay in Shape(Fitness, Gym, Meditation)
- Avoid bad Habits(Smoking ,Drinking alcohol etc
Due to the development of technology, medicine and new tools, the cure of diabetes is much more easier nowadays.
For type 1 diabetes the treatment is mainly an insuling injection.
For type 2 diabetes the solution can be with or without insulin injections. The cure for type is mainly with oral medication, based on different acids which depends by age and weight. (Metformin)
So what to eat and what to avoid ?
A study on Asian countries confirm that the level of diabetes is lower compared to countries from Europe or America. The Study sustains that this is a consequence of their diet mainly based on starch and vegetable products.
As far as we go we can understand that the main nutrient to considerate in the Diabetic Diet is carbohydrate and it is recommended to consume between 20-30% from the total daily calories.
You don’t need to stop eating less or more, but you should pay attention to the nutritional values of what you are eating.
To Eat :
- High Fiber Aliments :
– fruits ( bananas, oranges, raspberries, mangoes)
– vegetables (dark color, salads, black beans, broccoli, peas)
- Lean Proteins:
– meat ( chicken or turkey without skin)
– fish(recommended the ones rich in omega 3 and vitamin D)
– eggs, nuts, peanuts, tofu, seeds
– dairy( milk and yogurt but better with low fat or zero fat).
– bread ( better whole grain)
Fried foods (burgers, kebabs)
Saturated fat (butter , palm oil, red meat)
Trans fat (doughnuts, cookies)
